I wanted to know what additional cost is added to each car for the transfer and registration of the car in order to legally own one in argentina. Thank you
Regarding Argentina import taxes for vehicles, the cost structure usually includes several parts:
1. Import Duty
For conventional gasoline vehicles imported from outside Mercosur, the import duty is generally 35% of the CIF value.
For some electric or hybrid vehicles, Argentina has a special regime: the import duty can be reduced to 0%, but only for eligible models, quota-approved units, and vehicles meeting the required FOB value and technical conditions.
2. VAT / IVA
Argentina applies standard VAT of 21% on imports. This is usually calculated on the customs value plus import duty and related customs charges.
3. Statistical Fee
Argentina normally applies a statistical fee, commonly around 3%, depending on the customs classification and current regulation.
4. Advance Taxes / Local Taxes
Depending on the importer status and province, there may also be advance VAT, income tax prepayment, gross income tax, customs broker fees, port charges, storage, homologation, and registration costs.
5. Luxury / Internal Tax
Argentina has had changes to the internal tax, commonly known as the “luxury car tax.” Its application depends on the vehicle value and the latest tax threshold, so it must be confirmed case by case before import.
So, the final landed cost in Argentina is not only FOB or CIF. It must be calculated based on the exact HS/NCM code, CIF value, vehicle type, engine type, importer status, and destination province.
For a conventional gasoline vehicle from China, the main reference structure is usually:
CIF value + 35% import duty + 21% VAT + statistical fee + local/advance taxes + customs and port charges.
We recommend confirming the final calculation with an Argentine customs broker before shipment, because Argentina’s import rules and tax thresholds can change frequently.
